hiring considerations, things you should think about before hiring. If you are planning your house makeover project, you would definitely want to hire a   interior carpenter who is perfectly fit for the job to achieve the results you expect. But before hiring someone, take time to consider these important tips:

Identify the right type of Handyman Carpenter

Know the type of carpenter best suited for the carpentry job  you’ll need as there are various types of carpentry services such as rough carpentry, trim carpentry, finish carpentry as well as joiners and form builders. Generally, a skilled carpenter can do most types of types of carpentry work, but it is always best to assign them in their areas of expertise.

Ask home makeover jobs done for friends and relatives

You may discover some good interior carpentry done for your relatives’ or friend’s house, so go ahead and ask for some contact numbers of the carpenters they how to do the job. This would be a good enough reason for you to hire the  interior carpenter they recommend.

Ask for the opinion from a general contractor

When you’re looking for someone who can do precision and high-level custom cabinetry or finish carpentry, you may seek the expert opinion of a general contractor or any reputable craftsman you know. They have the experience of working with carpenters who can deliver the results you require. Ask for contact numbers or better yet, they may even arrange for you to meet some of them.

Take advantage of the internet

Many good carpenters and carpentry service companies now advertise themselves on the internet. Check out some of their websites and pay close attention to their portfolios and line of expertise. Also look for online reviews of their previous work Positive reviews from former clients are a good indication of good craftsmanship and work ethic.

Communication is key

This is a very important criterion when you search for a suitable woodworker. Make sure that you get along well with your prospective woodworkers before hiring them to ensure a best result possible for the project at hand. Hire someone who is a good listener, a good communicator and can appreciate your suggestions without making unnecessary arguments.

Over-all cost and contract

Before hiring a interior carpenter, make sure to discuss first the over-all cost of the whole project and see to it that you agree on details such as labor costs, material estimates, and other fees to be charged during the course of the project. It is good to compare the cost of service of several carpenters for you to decide who would be best for the job. After all of these are laid on the table and you are ready to hire a suitable carpenter, make sure to put it all in clear writing in the form of a contract. This would help resolve issues and problems you may have with your home makeover carpentry work in the future.

Site visitation fee of $50.00 will be included when signing up for hire a painter for a day service, or whenever the deal  will be signed within a 30 day period.

Painting work that you might consider when you are hiring a painter for a day.

· Interior wall painting

· drywall repairs (most homeowners can do a drywall repair if it is just simply plugging a hole for hanging pictures and other small little holes are cracks but when it comes to larger holes such as when a doorknob goes through a wall or there were some damages to drywall they don’t have the know-how and experience to be able to make the drywall repair flat and smooth so it does not show up through the paint job)

· bathroom painting (this is a place where intricate brushwork has to be done around places like the mirror and bathroom lights on the wall and above and around the vanity, there is certain amount of preparation work prior to painting such as caulking. Many cases the homeowner had put silicone which is a non-paintable substance around bathtubs and vanities making it hard to impossible to paint. This silicone caulking has to be removed first and prepared prior to repainting the surface)

· bedroom painting

· living room painting

Many homeowners often times require a painter with a steady hand and painting skill to paint feature walls. Feature wall needs a straight line where it connects to the adjacent wall.

· Ceiling painting (most people don’t like to do this because it is hard work and care has to be taken not to paint the walls)

· Baseboard painting (this is also a difficult task to make sure that that there is a nice smooth even paint line between the wall and the baseboard and no paint gets on the carpet or hardwood flooring.)

Condo Painting a small bachelor condo or apartment consisting of three rooms wall painting would only be $450.

These are some of the things that torontopainters get called for under regular basis. We have had homeowners with a list of to do’s of this nature that was completed in one day that they have been thinking about and got painted.

Bedroom Painted

Bedroom Painting: Why painting matters

Bedroom painting

There is nothing like walking into a freshly painted bedroom. It gives you the same feeling as if you’re walking into a very nice hotel room. You look around with excitement and feeling of being in a different place.

Something as simple as a freshly painted bedroom which you might have been looking at for years and years and thinking about changing something to make it look different.

For example I just repainted our bedroom after my wife had complained that she needed to change in her life. Believe it or not that made her feel better overall because it gave her a sense of something new in her life. It was the same old bedroom but with a new paint job. The colors that were on our walls in our bedroom were sort of a rosy color slightly on the darker side with a billiard green paisley border. This was nice at the time but it’s dated.

Going from a mid tone wall to a brighter off-white and in this case the wall was a mixture of yellow and gray but very light so it seemed like a faded cement type color. This type of color reflects light very well and gives the living space a more open look and feel while contrasting to the white trim work such as the window frame and the doorframe. The trim work should be a super white to make a good enough contrast to make it pop.

The room before when you turn the light on at nighttime obviously lit the room but with the new paint job it really illuminated the room almost like we put a more powerful lightbulb in there.

Next there will be a crown molding installed which I will do when I feel like it. This will give the room some more interior decoration. Something like hanging more pictures but there is not that much empty space on the walls to be able to place pictures without making the wall looking crowded. But adding the crown molding is a subtle enhancement to the looks of the room. This is will be on my next project fixing up the bedroom.

A typical building in Havana, Cuba, is beautiful but in need of paint. It may seem insignificant, but paint does more to brighten our hearts than any other single building feature.Painting is about empowering spaces and structures so they make us feel good, says home improvement expert Steve Maxwell.

Save Money by Investing In Quality Paints

Painting Your Home Tips

Spend less on paint. Buy the expensive stuff.

Local Toronto painting company

We always  thought for a while we would make more money by using cheap paint by saving on the paint. But it didn’t take long to figure out that we are wasting time and money on cheap paint.

Cheap inexpensive paint is watery and does not cover well. Obviously this is because they do not put any quality additives. And it is the additives that cost in a can of paint. The additives help spread rate of the paint and the coverage the paint has and of course the quality of the dried product its resistance to wear, sunlight and washing.

When a house painter is using cheap paint he will have to paint the house or room with an extra few coats of paint for it to cover and work well. And if that is the case the extra material bought will make up for the difference buying a more expensive brand of paint such as Benjamin Moore regal or the Sherwin-Williams emerald line or even the Pittsburgh Manor Hall line. These are high quality professional paints.

Not to mention that using the higher-end paints are also to be honest with you much easier to paint with. When you pass over a area with the paintbrush for example 90% coverage over the area you’re going over and when you bring to your brush back smoothing out the paint you will get the other 10% coverage and this is excellent and what the painters looking for which is efficiency for either the brush or roller. But when you have a cheap paint you might have to go over the same spot a couple times for it to cover properly and even so it might not.

There is not a whole heck of a lot of difference between a cheap/inexpensive paint compared to the top line quality interior paint. For example you might buy a can of Behr paint from Home Depot for $45 which is not half as good as Benjamin Moore regal paint which is approximately $60. Torontopainters find that using the Home Depot Behr paint it ends up sagging and you have to work it a couple times to make sure that it lays flat without drips or drops.

Good-quality paint lasts longer and works out cheaper over time … not to mention the fact that it is easy to apply and looks great! Look at your local hardware store for mistints — the term refers to perfectly good paint which was tinted to order, but turned out not to be the color the original customer had in mind. It’s subsequently sold for a fraction of sticker price. If you’re planning to paint two or more rooms, choose a neutral hue and invest in a 5-gallon container (it’s cheaper than purchasing five individual gallon cans). Or check in with your local recycling and hazardous household waste center to see whether they have any unwanted paint to give away. And don’t forget to prime; primer is relatively inexpensive and will make your pricy paint go much further. Whatever amount you spend, be sure to use low- to no-VOC paint, for the sake of your indoor air quality.

Home Decorating Essentials

   Home Decorating Tips

home decorating tips
Home decorating tips kept simple and basic nothing too fancy.

Home decorating tips: must not be an exhaustive task for you.  In fact, it should be a relaxing experience – a therapeutic task if you allow it to be.  Make use of the opportunity as a creative outlet.  However, there are times when you tend to go overboard and the design ends up an eyesore.  Here are some of the things that you can do and some things that you need to avoid in your interior decorating project:

Familiarize yourself with the floor plan.  Make sure that you have the correct dimensions of the room, the windows, and doors.  Take into consideration the placement of your would-be furniture so they do not block out electrical outlets or hamper the traffic in your house.  Never forget to take this floor plan with you when you go shopping.

Know your taste and style.  It is important that you arm yourself with a bit of information on how you could incorporate your personal style as you decorate your home.  You can start by looking at magazines and attending an open house to give you an idea.

House decorating ideas: should allow you to mix and match your decorations with your furniture and the overall look of your house.  It is important that know what paint colors would go best with your furniture and vice versa.

If you are working on a certain theme, keep this in mind when you go shop so that you do not go on a buying spree.  You should practice restraint and keep with the essentials first.  This would ensure that you do not add more clutter in your house.

When buying a decorative piece, it should be something that you could talk about when friends ask you about it.  It should not be something that you’d say you bought in a store because it looks nice.

Always consider the function of the room.  Remember, form follows function.

Interior Painting decorating need not be expensive.  You can opt to have do-it-yourself decors.

Furniture should be of high quality because it is something that you would use most of the time.  However, it would be best if you would mix expensive items with modest goods so they do not look pretentiously sticking out across a room.

One consequence of home decorating is that sometimes it becomes too personal that everything in the house reflects who you are.  This may pose a difficulty when friends would visit you.  It is best if you could keep personal items in areas that are private, like your room or your den.

It is alright if you want to design your home according to an existing design trend but you need to keep in mind that this trend may become obsolete in a few years time.  If you want, you can apply this trend in one area of your house while keeping the rest of the house in a timeless design.

House decorating does not have fast and steadfast rules but sometimes it is still best to follow the basics.

Basement Wall Paneling

Wood Paneling in Mississauga

Basement wall paneling
Basement wall paneling

Basement Wall Paneling  in Mississauga

Recently we had to open up a Basement Wall Paneling from the 80s. Sometimes people wood panel over important things such as electrical outlets and  water taps to shut off the water for the outside garden hose. In this particular case the customer was going to paint all the paneling in the basement here in Mississauga. This made it easy to just cut the wood paneling trying to locate the outside garden tap shut off valve.

When we were finished locating the water shot off valve we had to close the hole back by reinserting the paneling we just cut out. Since the piece of panel was cut out from a non-supported section  of panel (no studs here) in the wall we  had to install some strips of wood behind to secure the peace together.

Note, it is wise to cut the hole as uniform and square as possible is a nice clean straight cut preferably on some kind of a fault line. So when you go to put this back in the place it should line up nicely and the faultlines camouflage the cut joint.

In this case since the paneling in the basement will be painted it will be easy to plaster repair the joint with some fiber tape and some sandable plaster. The fiber tape is used instead of regular tape because it’s a little stronger than using tape and places were there’s a little bit of vibration in the wall since paneling is not as secure and solid as drywall. Furthermore in this case we also used some exterior plaster which has some vinyl content mixed in with it to give it some flexibility.

Once the plaster was done we primed the wood panel repair to a nice flat finished smooth surface being careful not to leave any humps or bumps or unsanded edges.

It is wise though to paint wood paneling that is old like this one was with a very low luster if not flat or velvet finish. Also make sure that there are no stains in the wood paneling because they will bleed through the paint job. Sometimes it’s wise to check all your walls to make sure that there are no pen marks crayon or felt marker marks. If this is the case then you should prime the spots with some kind of spot sealer such as binz or kilz to seal any stains.

Also paneling usually has open joints between panels and when you paint the walls you will see all these joints easily. To overcome these joints and to fix them we usually use latex caulking to lightly and smoothly fill these joints in.

Usually it takes  three coats of latex paint to give all your wood paneling a nice finished look.

Kitchen-cupboard-painting
Kitchen-cupboard-painting still showing wood grain

just finished painting the kitchen in a condo. The customer wanted to change his medium shade oak kitchen doors and drawers and cabinets to a dark reddish rust color. This was quite a change from the original paint color. Of course the  grain in the Oak still showed through giving it a natural oak look.

The customer was considering changing his backsplash in his kitchen the kitchen painting was done. He had sort of a beige tile as a backsplash contrasting to the original medium oak color which look quite unattractive and blasé. Block when the kitchen cupboards got painted with the new color the owner had a 2nd thought on changing the backsplash. So sometimes it’s worth it to think it through comparing different colors to your existing colors. In this case the customer was quite pleased because he didn’t have to change his backsplash.

Dark colors seem to make things “pop” out, the rather boring looking backsplash tiles seemed uninteresting with the old kitchen color but when the new kitchen counter got applied it made the backsplash look better.

Deck Staining Wood Stain Oils Vs. Latex

deck staining and repairs
We do beautiful deck staining and deck repairs.

Deck Staining

Not only is the type of stain but  the quality of the stain is important. Our Toronto deck building and  power washing and staining service has painted both and the process is basically the same. It’s all in the preparation work prior to staining. Power washing only in some cases will not be enough preparation work. We always power wash and sand where the sanding is important because what it does is it opens up and allows the stain to penetrate properly. But if the wood fibers are closed they won’t allow steam to penetrate so that is the reason why sanding is important. Another thing to think about and no is is better to do this work during drier parts of the season. When the wood is moist and damp it won’t allow deep penetration of the stain. So when the ward has been sitting in the sun and air drying it will take the stain the best.

Latex exterior stains

every year are getting better and better with newer technology and chemistry. There are more factors involved than just making a straight stain because also the stain has to be environmentally friendly. And at the beginning with stains and actually latex house paints the quality wasn’t as good as it was with oil paints but now with new technology they are improving rapidly.

Deck Staining

deck sanding and staining is one of our specialties here in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Richmond Hill areas.

Types There are two main types of oil-based stain and one main category of latex stain. Bleaching oil-based stains makes wood appear grayish and naturally weathered, according to Iowa State University. They help give wood an even color and kill mold and mildew. Pigmented oil stains and latex stains come in a variety of colors to give wood different tints. Oil-based pigmented stains come in thicker and thinner finishes, which have more or less of a coloring effect and allow less or more of the natural wood grain to show through.

Appearance Latex stains almost always have a solid color appearance, while oil-based stains range from very transparent to solid, according to Iowa State University. Some transparent latex stains exist, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but they coat the wood rather than soaking into it like transparent oil-based stains do. Therefore, transparent or semi-transparent oil-based stains can often give a more natural appearance than latex-based stains. Oil-based solid (opaque) stains tend to coat wood similarly to latex-based stains, but transparent oil-based stains tend to soak into wood without leaving much of a layer over its surface. Weathering Semitransparent latex stains tend to form a very thin protective coat on wood and are prone to cracking in extreme weather conditions, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Opaque (solid) latex stains form a thicker, yet flexible layer of protection over the wood, which does not crack as easily as semitransparent latex stain or opaque oil-based stain. Solid oil stains tend to crack easily unless exterior wood gets several coats of the stain. Semitransparent oil-based stains soak into wood and, therefore, do not crack or peel under extreme weather conditions, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They will fade with time, but are very easy to reapply.

Lasting Power Lowes.com explains that latex stains tend to last longer than penetrating oil-based stains. However, the U.S. Department of Agriculture warns that if a latex stain does peel, cracks and layers of other stain may show easily through a new coat of latex stain. Penetrating (semi-translucent) oil stains, however, go on easily over old weathered stain and blend relatively well. Other Differences Latex stains deter mold more than oil-based stains, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Latex stains, do, however, have downside of showing lap marks more often than oil-based stains.

Home Staging – Maximize Selling Price – Minimize Selling Time – Toronto

Home Staging

We have a lot of real estate agents and home stagers call us to repaint certain parts of the home. Sometimes not the entire house has to be painted especially if the house is in very good condition has a well-maintained paint job and the colors are suitable.

Room Colors

Some of the biggest issues are colors. Not everyone likes purple or green while the home owners like these colors the general public would not. Colors should be chosen to suit the general public and the less the color the more likely more people will like the home.

Drywall Repairs

Also while in the process of painting there will be surface preparations that will take care of drywall damage dents and scratches and separating trim from the wall which will be calked in getting rid of open gaps and joints. The dents in the drywall can be plastered in and smoothed to make the wall look nice and fresh and even.

Water stains

on the ceiling are unsightly and should be sealed and painted. This could cause a variety of questions such as, what caused the water stain was there a water leak somewhere? What if the stain is gone and the scene looks nice and fresh there will be no questions asked.

Baseboards And Doors

baseboards and doors are and important feature that shouldn’t be overlooked because they are a focal point of the room. If they look scoffed and damaged they will be fixed and repaired to look original.

Maximize selling price – Minimize selling time.

Home staging is the act of preparing a private residence prior to going up for sale in the real estate marketplace. The goal of staging is to sell a home quickly, and for the most money possible by making a home appealing to the highest number of potential buyers. Staging focuses on improving a property to make it appeal to the largest number of buyers by transforming it into a welcoming, appealing, and attractive product for sale. Many people believe that staging raises the value of a property by way of reducing the home’s flaws, depersonalizing, decluttering, cleaning, improving condition items, and landscaping. For vacant homes, staging furniture is used to create a living space the buyer can “see” themselves living in. Properly executed staging leads the eye to attractive features while minimizing flaws.

Home Staging Benefits

  • Staged homes show better than competing homes for sale.
  • Research shows that staged homes often sell for considerably more money and in substantially less time than non-staged homes.
  • Photos of staged homes look better in print and internet advertising.
  • Staged homes are recognized as properties ready to sell and are more likely to be shown.
  • Staged homes are recognized by buyers as the best properties to see.

Selecting The Right Wood or Composite

Toronto deck repairs on: Selecting the right Wood for your Deck

Toronto deck repairs and deck building are mostly made from the most common of woods that are locally available with ease from the building centers such as Home Depot, Rona and Home hardware. They are the major suppliers mostly for the common deck builder. Even when you buy red Western Cedar is not as good as naturally grown wood.

Buying wood for your deck that is a high quality has to be more than likely a special order from a specialty supplier of deck wood that can order from various parts of the country here in Canada or possibly even the US.

There are several popular choices for deck boards. Once you have chosen the boards, I pick the appropriate wood for your trim, posts and railings. Based on your needs and budget, I can build decks out of other woods and composite materials.

Redwood ~ A distinctive pink/red colored wood which ages to gray. The red heartwood is naturally resistant to damage from termites and moisture. Any white part of a redwood board, known as sapwood, has little resistance to termites and rot. I use Construction Grade Heart Redwood, commonly known as Con Heart, which has no sapwood and some knots. I can also use more expensive grades of redwood, if your budget permits.

Mangaris™ (Red Balau) ~ A dense grained, reddish-brown hardwood from Indonesia/Thailand that ages to a silver gray like Teak. It stains up like Mahogany and is more durable than Redwood. It costs about 10-20% more than redwood and is moderately more labor intensive. See the rich color of the unstained wood.

“Ironwoods” ~ A chocolate brown family of heavy and durable South American hardwoods, including Ipe and Pau Lope. They offer excellent termite and weather resistance. However, they are considerably more labor intensive and it costs about 10-20% more than redwood.

Composites ~ The best known of these new decking materials is Trex™, an extremely durable mix of wood fibers (sawdust) and recycled plastics. It requires no staining, painting, waterproofing, or regular wood maintenance. However, urban legend has it that squirrels love using Trex edges to sharpen their teeth. New composites are coming on the market every day and research on the Internet will yield lots of options. To see what colors and grains are available, check out Trex’s Brasilia,

Accents and Origins products.

via Selecting The Right Wood or Composite for Los Angeles Decks, Fences, Gates & Arbors.

These ones are quite exotic and probably cost more than most people can afford to pay for wood on a deck. Also it is worth mentioning that the additional extra expense for the premium wood doesn’t mean that it would lasting longer, it might just be aesthetically pleasing and that’s it.

We have found that special order red Cedar grade 1 even though it cost quite about more money is worth it is just simply looks great and rich.
