Small Bathroom Decorating Tips – Detailed Information About It

Small bathroom

If there is no floorspace to be able to move around comfortably then there is much sense of putting anything in there but if you want to decorate the walls or make the walls more usable and useful you might consider putting some shelving above the toilet where it would not interfere with moving around in the small bathroom.

Depending on what type of looks you want your bathroom to have and if you want to use your bathroom also as a storage place for bathroom such as toiletries or bath towels etc. you might consider a boxed vanity with multiple drawers and double door cabinet opening under the sink where you might be able to store items.

Using a bathroom vanity cabinet will look much different than using a pedestal sink and totally change the looks of your bathroom.

If you have a bathtub/shower in your small bathroom you might consider using a very unique looking shower door that will definitely change the way the room looks since it is such a large item in such a small room.

All toilets fixtures basically look the same, some with larger tanks somewhat longer seats and some with different colors so these all have to be taken into consideration when decorating and designing your bathroom. And of course you should also think whether or not it will complement your bathroom sink and taps. These items should be color-coordinated with each other.

Tiled walls are also a nice distinct feature. A basic tile can be used on the walls with a two or three piece border tile with insets. This would set up the washroom nicely. Here too you can

for nice color coordination.

Floor tiling also can be chosen to your taste. It does not much to do with anything else in the room. You can make the floor tiling look like anything you want for your personal choice.

front porch decor starts at your door

You don’t have to totally remodel your porch or even buy furniture to give it a face lift. Just buy a can of paint and call it a day! Painting a door a bright color is like smiling at your neighbors. It can show openness and express personality. Just make sure the color you choose isn’t more like a smirk–no one wants to live next to the house with the fuchsia or chartreuse door.

How to paint your front door

painting your front door requires certain amount of scheduling an organization. You can’t paint your front door and then close it afterwards. Paint takes a certain amount of time to dry. Paint more or less has two stages of drawing basically one is dry to the touch and the other one is dry to cure and this is the one that has to occur before the door can close.

Pick a day

that you can afford to keep your door open or at least cracked open for as long as you can preferably the whole day. Organize the process so that all your preparation work is done the day before so that you don’t waste any of the daytime hour for drying. Do all your wood and dent repairs if you have a steel door. If you have a steel clad door that has some minor dents and scrapes it can be repaired the same way as a car body. Sand the damaged areas making sure at is clean then you can apply some autobody filler to fill over the scratched or damaged area or dented area. If the damages are small and not deep we usually uses spot glaze which is a top coating for auto body filler which is very sandable and is very smooth along you to make a smooth even paint finish.

Wooden door repair

if you have an absolutely beautiful wood door that you want to restore sometimes better to have a replacement door fitted while you are working on the front door. This way you can work on the door horizontally laying down flat on its back allowing you to work away at defective spots on the door. Once all the damages such as scratches nail holes and cracks and splinters are all sanded out, repaired, caulked, primed, and painted. You can flip the door on its other side and paint the interior side of the door if you wish.

Choosing the color for the front door

there is no formula for figuring out what color you should be painting your front door. This all depends on what you have in mind. If you want to conform to the rest of the neighborhood examine the entry doors down the street and neighborhood. If you want your home to have a focal point and stand out and want to have your front door as your focal point (say if somebody is looking for your home you can tell them you’re the house with the dark blue door, that is if no one else has a dark blue door down your street). Add nice contrasting door will work best most times.

Front door upgrade

it is always best if you can afford to buy new hardware such as a front door entry set. They come in different styles and textures. Most commonly front doors have either an aluminum/stainless steel brushed finish or they have real bronze or bronze plated door handles. If you have a window in your door sometimes people either put a tinted privacy screen on the back or even a patterned privacy screen which makes it look quite different some of these can be bought at places like homesense stores.

7 Tips on Getting a Cheaper Price From Your Painter

How To Get Cheap Paint Jobs

Toronto House Painting Company

tries lower your house painting costs with a few special painting offers for cheaper painting jobs.

The biggest cost saver in painting a house or room is the amount of time spent preparing to paint the room. There are different ways of trying to save money and make it easier for the painter to do his job.

Obviously the first thing is if the room could be empty completely just leaving the bare walls. This is a great timesaver because truly the only time spent in this room would be strictly for painting. Generally painting an average size bedroom would take about three hours for two coats of paint.

Empty House

If the entire home is empty there could be a great savings for the homeowner. This would be the same as painting a new home empty of any furnishings.

Another house painting cost saving tips is trying to schedule the paint job on the off-season where the painter is not as busy because of having to also schedule into their busy schedule exterior paint jobs. Most people for some reason want to do their inter-house painting in the summer. This could be due to a number of reasons such as having the windows open to ventilate paint fumes, the painting project will coincide with the vacation, there is more daylight.

Same paint can: material and color.

This is a great timesaver because it would save the time of changing over paint cans two different colors and cleaning brushes and rollers. If a house has four bedrooms and each bedroom has a different paint color there is a good chance that it would take about 15 or 20 minutes to change over to the next paint. The paint tray has to be cleaned out and rollers and brushes have to be also cleaned out so they do not contaminate the next paint color.

Closet Painting

And other money-saving tactic is not to paint the closets because it takes a longer period of time proportionally to paint the closet than it does the paint four walls in an empty room.

Remove Wallpaper

If the home has wallpaper installed on any rooms or hallways it is best to have the homeowner remove the paper because it is a time-consuming process which will eat up a lot of the paint budget. Removing the wallpaper in some cases might be difficult where the homeowner could not remove it. But in other cases the wallpaper has been installed professionally make it easy to be removed at a later date.

Wall Repair

Wall preparation, should really be done by the painter to ensure good quality painting work in the end. But if there are some rough wall repairs to be done, again not really the scope of a painting contractor they should be done prior to the regular house painting procedure. Small holes and cracks are easily and normally a part of wall painting but anything larger than that should be taken care of prior to painting to save money.

Another great painting savings tip would be to paint the entire house the same colo

We always  thought for a while we would make more money by using cheap paint by saving on the paint. But it didn’t take long to figure out that we are wasting time and money on cheap paint.

Cheap inexpensive paint is watery and does not cover well. Obviously this is because they do not put any quality additives. And it is the additives that cost in a can of paint. The additives help spread rate of the paint and the coverage the paint has and of course the quality of the dried product its resistance to wear, sunlight and washing.

When a house painter is using cheap paint he will have to paint the house or room with an extra few coats of paint for it to cover and work well. And if that is the case the extra material bought will make up for the difference buying a more expensive brand of paint such as Benjamin Moore regal or the Sherwin-Williams emerald line or even the Pittsburgh Manor Hall line. These are high quality professional paints.

Not to mention that using the higher-end paints are also to be honest with you much easier to paint with. When you pass over a area with the paintbrush for example 90% coverage over the area you’re going over and when you bring to your brush back smoothing out the paint you will get the other 10% coverage and this is excellent and what the painters looking for which is efficiency for either the brush or roller. But when you have a cheap paint you might have to go over the same spot a couple times for it to cover properly and even so it might not.

There is not a whole heck of a lot of difference between a cheap/inexpensive paint compared to the top line quality interior paint. For example you might buy a can of Behr paint from Home Depot for $45 which is not half as good as Benjamin Moore regal paint which is approximately $60. Torontopainters find that using the Home Depot Behr paint it ends up sagging and you have to work it a couple times to make sure that it lays flat without drips or drops.

Good-quality paint lasts longer and works out cheaper over time … not to mention the fact that it is easy to apply and looks great! Look at your local hardware store for mistints — the term refers to perfectly good paint which was tinted to order, but turned out not to be the color the original customer had in mind. It’s subsequently sold for a fraction of sticker price. If you’re planning to paint two or more rooms, choose a neutral hue and invest in a 5-gallon container (it’s cheaper than purchasing five individual gallon cans). Or check in with your local recycling and hazardous household waste center to see whether they have any unwanted paint to give away. And don’t forget to prime; primer is relatively inexpensive and will make your pricy paint go much further. Whatever amount you spend, be sure to use low- to no-VOC paint, for the sake of your indoor air quality.

   Home Decorating Tips

home decorating tips
Home decorating tips kept simple and basic nothing too fancy.

Home decorating tips: must not be an exhaustive task for you.  In fact, it should be a relaxing experience – a therapeutic task if you allow it to be.  Make use of the opportunity as a creative outlet.  However, there are times when you tend to go overboard and the design ends up an eyesore.  Here are some of the things that you can do and some things that you need to avoid in your interior decorating project:

Familiarize yourself with the floor plan.  Make sure that you have the correct dimensions of the room, the windows, and doors.  Take into consideration the placement of your would-be furniture so they do not block out electrical outlets or hamper the traffic in your house.  Never forget to take this floor plan with you when you go shopping.

Know your taste and style.  It is important that you arm yourself with a bit of information on how you could incorporate your personal style as you decorate your home.  You can start by looking at magazines and attending an open house to give you an idea.

House decorating ideas: should allow you to mix and match your decorations with your furniture and the overall look of your house.  It is important that know what paint colors would go best with your furniture and vice versa.

If you are working on a certain theme, keep this in mind when you go shop so that you do not go on a buying spree.  You should practice restraint and keep with the essentials first.  This would ensure that you do not add more clutter in your house.

When buying a decorative piece, it should be something that you could talk about when friends ask you about it.  It should not be something that you’d say you bought in a store because it looks nice.

Always consider the function of the room.  Remember, form follows function.

Interior Painting decorating need not be expensive.  You can opt to have do-it-yourself decors.

Furniture should be of high quality because it is something that you would use most of the time.  However, it would be best if you would mix expensive items with modest goods so they do not look pretentiously sticking out across a room.

One consequence of home decorating is that sometimes it becomes too personal that everything in the house reflects who you are.  This may pose a difficulty when friends would visit you.  It is best if you could keep personal items in areas that are private, like your room or your den.

It is alright if you want to design your home according to an existing design trend but you need to keep in mind that this trend may become obsolete in a few years time.  If you want, you can apply this trend in one area of your house while keeping the rest of the house in a timeless design.

House decorating does not have fast and steadfast rules but sometimes it is still best to follow the basics.

Average Cost to Paint a House?

This all depends on what types of homes are being painted. There are a few different types: fully detached homes in the neighbourhood of 3000 ft.² to 5000 ft.² in higher end neighbourhoods, these homes are usually equipped with more extravagant interior finishes and trim work which of course require more specialized attention. Some homes might have all oak wood paneling libraries that in in itself or larger jobs in preparation work such as fine sanding/preparing and then multiple coats of clear finishes to acquire a depth required to give it a lustrous feel and look. This type of work can only be done by professional painters who have experience at this type of work.

These homes also might have high ceilings not uncommon to have 10 foot high walls with crown molding at the top requiring accurate brushwork at a greater height which in turn slows down the painting process. These homes might have also large door and window casings with corner blocks that require more specialized painting techniques. The main area of the home might have two-story high entrance way that may require scaffolding to access some higher parts of the ceiling.

There could also be two or three tone mixture of paint and stain on circular stairs that require meticulous special attention to detail ensuring that the staircase is more of a furniture grade finish. ll these items added up to an expensive paint job that can only be quoted per job basis. And then there are your regular type subdivision homes that are made with your basic standard interior designs and trimmings. And these ones are more likely to be quoted on a price per square foot for painting bases.

These prices can vary anywhere from $1.25 to $2.50 per square foot depending on factors such as if the ceilings are being painted or not, and if the ceilings were ever painted before. If the home is empty for the painting process or if the home is lived in because if it is lived in and that means that there will be some furniture to move around and cover to protect it from any paint sprinkle and paint damage. Some more important factors are if the walls have ever been painted before, if the walls are white and a color is applied and what the depth of the color is whether it is a light color or whether it is a dark color because dark colors require more coats of paint.

If the home has to finish settling and has numerous cracks along the ceilings and elsewhere that need to be pasta repaired. This is a regular occurrence on homes after they had been built and the house starts settling. It is recommended to not paint in some cases up to two years to ensure that the home doesn’t settle further after the paint job has been performed creating more cracks here and there. Then there are condos, again there are variations in price per foot or even by the job quotes because condos can range anywhere from the superhigh luxury condo requires an amazing amount of detail to your regular standard one or two bedroom condo.

Regular one or two bedroom condos can vary anywhere from $1000-$2000 again depending on what’s required to be painted in the condo. A new condos that have stucco ceilings it is required that the ceilings get painted with oil paint first this prevents the stucco from crumbling or ruining the texture using latex paints. This can add to the cost of the condo painting job. Some condos are quite elaborate that have two-story areas built in, extension ladder work to be able to paint the upper half of the large open area this can also drive up the price of the condo paint job. So as you can see there are lots of variables to calculate house painting rates

installing fresh piece of basement paneling

Painting Over Paneling

Painting Over Paneling

I’m sure there are thousands of finished basements in Toronto with wood paneling. This was an easy and quick way back in the 70s to finish basements into living spaces. The paneling was thin and flexible and easy to cut. It could be installed with just a hammer and a bag of paneling nails, a circular saw.

Tradition back then was natural wood look and paneling came in various different types of wood textures and looks. Some paneling would be oak and some paneling would be Cedar. These panels would have indents in the panel itself that were 3/16 inch 1/4 inch wide allowing room for the nail to be set so that they’ll would not sit on top of the flat surface of the board but in the indent to hide the nail. This is also good place to join boards/panel giving it a natural continuous look.

After the paneling had been installed it looked very good. In its natural state of assembly one could not detect gaps on the walls were the panels joined.

If the homeowner decides they want to up date their basement room with painting the wall wood paneling or painted their wainscot paneling in their family rooms or dens a certain amount of preparation has to be done. Firstly we make sure that all the paneling is clean and free of dirt and dust and of course grease and grime so the paint can stick to it. Once everything is has been cleaned we suggest using a finding nap roller something like a 10 mill roller to start rolling the wood paneling.

A word of caution, I strongly suggest using an oil-based primer to ensure two things. Using oil-based primer gives you the strongest adhesion to the paneling also it seals any tarnish and stain on the wall that cannot be seen by the naked eye.

Once all the paneling has been primed it is now time to inspect for any gaps and cracks and paneling joints discrepancies. They can be filled in now with latex paintable caulking. Make sure that you do the caulking smoothly and evenly. Because caulking when it dries and painted over will look like a painted over caulking if there are globs and heavy deposits and overruns making it look ugly. So make sure that you smooth out your caulking.

Removing Paint from Doors

Removing Paint from Doors

stripping paint off doors with scraper
stripping paint off doors with scraper
paint stripping raises paint off door
the paint stripper raised the paint off the door

Can and should be done in different ways depending on the type of door. If it is a flat steel door or if it is a varnished stained oak door different procedures apply to removing the paint off these.

If your door assuming at the front door you want to remove the paint is a flat door and depending on how much paint has already been applied in previous jobs to the door. If you have a thick layer of paint from many years of painting on a flat slab door then what Toronto painters would do is to lay the door flat on its back either outdoors or in a well ventilated area and apply a thick coat of paint stripper on it. Let the paint stripper do its work depending on the strength of the paint stripper might take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and a half. If you are using an eco-friendly paint stripper you’ll be closer to an hour and a half or a couple of hours or even more. The only nice thing about using these eco-paint strippers is that they are of course environmentally friendly and less harmful. By the way you can also if you are wearing rubber gloves put a coat of the stripper on the one side turn the door upside down and apply the stripper to the second side. Don’t worry about the first side which you put the stripper on by turning it upside down it will only help it do its job faster.

Take a scraper like a putty knife and start scraping the paint off since it is soft and malleable and should come off easily you might have to do this process a couple times and to you got the paint only removed.

 paint stripped off open doors
paint stripped off one open door
finished oak doors after doors stripping
oak doors completely paint stripped and finished

If you have a contoured wood door that has panels it might be a little bit more difficult to be able to remove the varnishes or paints. Obviously care must be taken to any kind of molding that is on the door. This process if trying to do it accurately and carefully will take much more time to do. Attention must be taken to any scraping or scratching and even hitting not to damage the wood. All this is what we’re looking for here is a new look to the door and if we start damaging the door with nicks and scratches we had defeated the purpose. Again our procedure would be to lay the door flat apply a liberal amount of paint stripper onto the door let it do its work. Again this time with a series of contoured scraping tools and steel wall you can sculpture at the removal of the softened paint off the door. And hard to get spots that are soft enough the steel wool to remove it use a one or zero steel wall of course wearing gloves to protect the skin on your hands. And the small places where still won’t get into you have to use a very sharp pointed scraper to move those lines where the paint is stuck.

When all the paint has been removed from the wood door it most likely needs a good thorough sanding. Usually when wood gets wet it will raise the fibers of the wood making it necessary to sand. After the door has been sanded check for any damages that might have been done in the process of stripping the paint off. If the door has natural clear finish or stain finish thence necessary to get a sustainable wood filler for patching any errors. They again have to be sanded smooth. Finally the door has to be dusted off.

Removing Wallpaper From Plaster Walls

Removing Wallpaper From Plaster Walls

 removing wallpaper
removing wallpaper

Wallpaper removal can be as laborious process and the best thing to do is to do it properly which will speed it up. Certain papers come off different ways. There are some wallpapers that come off very easily and there are some that are very stubborn and just won’t come off without a fight.

The easiest wallpapers to remove are sometimes the most expensive ones. These are the older pattern wallpapers that are basically a paper with glue on the back. When these wallpapers get wet they are porous and will get wet always through straight to the drywall.

The way to remove this wallpaper is to soak it twice. The first coat or application of water will start the process. When the paper is not soaking wet anymore just damp looking it is time to put a second layer of water on it. Quick note >put a little bit of soap/dishwashing detergent into the hot water <

also make sure that you have some type of cloth or bed sheet or tablecloth on the floor to catch all the dripping water. Do not push hard on the roller squeezing at the water let the roller apply the water gently moving upward on the wall applying the water evenly on the upstroke then lift the roller off-the-wall go to the bottom again and was an upward stroke apply more water.

When you are able to remove the paper easily with your fingernail it’s time. If you run across a spot that the wallpaper is not easily separating from the wall you should give it some additional water soaking. The whole idea here is to let the water do the work.

Sometimes you run into wallpapers that are plastic coated and this is a real hassle. This type of wallpaper you have to gently trying to move the top layer in one piece if you can. We have tried to use the Rotary perforator that you can buy paint store but that is still just as much work using this as it is to manually try to remove the top layer of plastic coating. This is a job of patients. Another method is that we occasionally use is a sharp window scraper that you clean the paint after Windows with scraping the plastic layer off carefully not to dig into the drywall. Once you have all the bits and pieces of vinyl part of the wallpaper removed you can continue with soaking the wall as in the previous section to finish the job.

Most probably under average situations and conditions there will be some plaster repair to do on the wall because of scraper gouges and cuts on the wall from when the paper was double cut by the wallpaper hanger.

Once your walls are totally dry and dry enough to sand, they need to be sanded smooth. Visually check any spots now for the plaster repairs. When applying the plaster make sure that you do not leave large buildups of plaster on the seemingly flat wall. Apply the plaster sparingly just to repair the damage because the more plaster you put on the wall the more you’ll have to sand off to make it smooth.

Now that all your walls have been plastered dried and sanded it is time to prime all the spots that were plastered this prevents the plaster from bleeding through the paint job. Make sure that your priming is nice and smooth and even with no roller marks.

You are now ready to put one or two coats of finish coat paint on the wall.
